Intercessions for Sunday 3/21/2010

Presider: By our baptismal vow to continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, the breaking of the bread, and the prayers, let us pray for the church and the world:

LEM: For an increase of understanding between Christian and Muslims;

v In the Anglican Cycle for the Church in Australia and our companion dioceses of Bor in Sudan with their bishop Nathaniel and Brasilia with their bishop Mauricio, and in own diocese for St. Paul’s in Jeffersonville;

v For those who lead our church including the House of Bishops as it gathers for their spring meeting in Texas, Katharine our Presiding Bishop, Catherine our diocesan bishop, the vestry, wardens and lay and clergy staff of this parish; Lord, as we pray,

People: Hear our prayer.

Presider: By our baptismal vow to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in

Christ, let us pray for the ways we hear, receive and live the Good News:

LEM: For all who worship with us this morning, and for our maturing in the ways we

support persons in their response to God’s call;

v For those in the Inquirer’s Seminar, the members of the Youth Group in their faith formation, those who give themselves to special study during Lent and those preparing for Baptism;

v For persons to come forward to be new Godly Play instructors; Lord, as we pray,

People: Hear our prayer.

Presider: By our baptismal vow to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves, let us pray for an increased openness to the ways we can serve others and to the ways that God serves us through others:

LEM: For those who come to St. John’s for food, sobriety, shelter or any human need;

v For the success of efforts to ensure environmental stability;

v For God’s healing or protection in the lives of Emily Arterberry, Mary Moore, Reid Nolte, Randy Brist, Doris Bishop, Bob Slagel, Frank Groves, Heather Johnston-Nicholson, Aliya, Kim, Gordon, Georgie, Colin, Mark, Lois, Dianne, Donald, Connie, Gail, Anne, Kimberly, Chris, Lily, Maggie, Jake, Carol, Al, John, the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, and any others we now name …;

v For those whose lives are affected by mental illness in any way;

v In our parish cycle for Ted and Amy Paget and their children Ed and Will, Byron and Elaine Parvis, Mike and Alicia Parvis and their children Aerialle and Michael, Louise Perkins, Ray Polstra and Doug and Barbara Powell; Lord, as we pray,

People: Hear our prayer.

Presider: By our baptismal vow to strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being, let us pray for God’s will to guide our thinking and acting:

LEM: For our elected leaders and all who make policy for the common good;

v For local school districts as they discern the allocation of financial resources and for all affected by the decisions that must be made;

v For the safety of all service men and women wherever they are stationed and their families; for Naomi, Keegan, Nick, Stephen, Sam, Tim, Cindy, Davis and Cecily; for civilian populations living in combat zones; for our enemies and those who wish us harm, and those whom we have harmed;

v For those scheduled to be executed this week including Hank Skinner in Texas and for his family; for his victims including Twila and Randy Busby and Elwin Caler and their families; and for his executioner;

v For those who work in the criminal justice system and those who volunteer in our local county jail; Lord, as we pray,

People: Hear our prayer.

Presider: Mindful of God’s blessing in our lives as individuals and a community, we give thanks for God’s abundance in our lives;

LEM: For the return of more moderate weather, the renewal that spring break affords, the richness of the liturgical year;

v And for one personal blessing we name at this time … ;

Presider: Let us pray for the dying and the dead,

LEM: For all whose ashes have been buried in the Memorial Garden, for Sandra (mother of Tammy Tator-Vorbeck) who died last Sunday, Michael (father of Jim Marciniak) and any others we name at this time …;

Godly Play

Godly Play, Jerome Berryman’s interpretation of Montessori religious education, is an imaginative approach to working with children. This approach supports, challenges, nourishes and helps guide their spiritual quest. Godly Play is different from many other approaches to children's work with scripture. One popular approach is having fun with scripture... Having superficial fun with scripture is fine, but children also need deeply respectful experiences with scripture if they are to fully enter into its power. If we leave out the heart of the matter, we risk trivializing the Christian way of life. We also miss the profound fun of existential discovery, a kind of "fun" that keeps us truly alive! Godly Play assumes that Children have some experience of the mystery of the presence of God in their lives, but that they lack the language, the permission and the understanding to express and enjoy that spiritual experience in our secular culture. In Godly Play, we enter into our parables, sacred stories, silence and liturgy in order to discover God, ourselves, one another and the world around us.

The Christian education and faith formation programs at St. John’s support growth in knowledge of the Christian story through teaching and learning, prayer and worship, service, and fellowship. We seek to provide programs (1) that are scripture-based and age appropriate; (2) that identify and teach the Episcopal tradition; and (3) that provide opportunities to apply Gospel values to our lives.

We do this within a physically safe and comfortable environment, mindful of our baptismal promises to “respect the dignity of every human being” and to do “all in our power to support persons in their life in Christ.”
